Interactive Mapping with R
Analysts ranging from beginning to advanced levels who want to get familiar with R’s capabilities for interactive web cartography.
Students must have R.
- Interactive mapping foundations (mapview and Leaflet)
- Advanced workflows (deck.gl and ggiraph)
In this 2.5 hour workshop, you will learn how to make elegant interactive maps with minimal code using the R programming language. You’ll gain experience with a range of libraries for interactive mapping in R; learn how to customize and share interactive maps; and dynamically link maps and charts using R.
In the first hour of the workshop, you’ll build and customize interactive maps using the mapview and Leaflet R packages. You’ll learn how to use mapview to rapidly view spatial data in R, and customize mapview’s output for presentation-quality mapping. You’ll then gain experience with R’s powerful interface to the Leaflet mapping library and learn tips and tricks for making interactive maps in R.
The second hour of the workshop will focus on alternative approaches to interactive mapping in R. You’ll learn how to create dynamic web interfaces that link maps and charts together and create stunning three-dimensional visualizations with your spatial data straight from R. Along the way, you’ll learn about powerful visualization tools like ggiraph and deck.gl.
The last 30 minutes are a Q&A session where live participants asked a variety of additional questions about GIS workflows in R.
What you’ll get:
- Unlimited access to the workshop recording and chat log for future use.
- A step-by-step annotated tutorial in Quarto format to help you build your knowledge.

This course made it less intimidating to switch from ArcMap to ArcGIS Pro. So glad I attended.

These courses are great. I am so pressed for time this is the only way I can acquire extra skills these days. Thank you Eric for all your hard work!
Chris Hickin, NYC Fire Dept.
I have attended a number of instructor-led training courses offered by ESRI, which are great in their own right, but the Mastering the ArcGIS Server JavaScript API course gets much more in-depth than they often do. I really liked the recommended reading, they helped expand the terms being covered in lecture to concrete examples that could be related back to my work more directly instead of just having the lecture and exercises alone. I learned a lot andwill recommend this and other GeoSpatial Training courses to the GIS'ers I know. Thanks for putting this course together and offering it.
Jason Warzinik, Boone County, MO
